Novel Design of a Hybrid Superconducting Fault Current Limiter with Controlled Solid-State Device

Fault current limiters are essential devices used to protect the power system and its equipment against high levels of fault current, which growing up due increase new sources. This paper proposes a novel design Hybrid Superconducting Current Limiter (Hybrid SFCL), is composed basically by thyristors in series with superconducting element. branch connected parallel an air-core reactor, improves limitation ensures safe operation superconductor Another advantage this topology use voltage drop as input parameter controller. detect fault, avoids need for sensor and, consequently, reduces manufacturing costs. In work, PSCAD/EMTDC software was employed modeling SFCL 2G tape, modeled considering thermal-electrical analysis. The results show that efficiently limited, developed controller strategy has shown relatively good performance. Furthermore, proposed guarantees fast recovery time, order 500 ms, when compared conventional resistive SFCL.
